Have you ever wondered about the intricacies of job interviews in Japan? In this column, we will highlight key aspects that interviewers focus on when conducting interviews with foreigners.

Suitability for the job

Interviewers meticulously assess a candidate's suitability for the position at hand. They delve into whether the candidate's personality and skills align seamlessly with the job description, aiming to avoid any potential mismatches.
To ensure a good fit, it's essential to thoroughly understand the company's job description and articulate how your background and experience align with the role. Emphasizing the relevance of your education or previous work experiences is a strategic move. When possible, showcase your knowledge and skills that directly apply to the job.

Personality and communication skill

Understanding the candidate's personality, strengths, and individuality is a key focus for interviewers. It is important to honestly express your thoughts and opinions without pretending to be someone you are not, and to highlight your special skills and strengths that can be utilized at the company you are applying for.
Communication skill is an important factor in the interview process. This doesn’t mean "being able to get along with anyone" but rather "being able to understand what the others want to express”. The ability to understand the interviewer's questions and answer clearly in your own words is required.

Japanese language proficiency

While it ultimately depends on the jobs/companies, the candidate's Japanese language ability is what most Japanese companies are most interested about. Use correct Keigo (honorific expressions) if you can. In reality, you don’t need to be overly concerned about slight mistakes in Japanese. The interviewer is looking to see if you can convey your opinions in an easy-to-understand manner rather than perfect Japanese language ability. Even if you are concerned about your Japanese language proficiency, you should speak confidently and openly.

Understanding expectations and presenting your best self!

When interviewing foreign candidates, interviewers are often interested in skills, personality, and Japanese language ability.
Don’t hide your personality to try to match what the company is looking for, because this will result in a bad match. Focus instead on being able to clearly talk about your skills, experience, and what you are looking for.
